\section{Policy on Student Misuse of Resources : TJS}

Re: 40.4, {\bf TJS} will look at integrating our new policy statement
into the conditions of use form that new students sign.

\section{Installing New Macs : JIM}

Re: 40.5, {\bf JIM} and CSG will put as many as possible of the new Mac
2si's in the Mac Lab and HP Lab to increase the number of Macs available
for project report writing.
Some may have to be standalone, others may be Appletalked - the Ethernet cards
were unsatisfactory.

\section{Project and Extra Macs : JIM}

Re: 40.5, {\bf JIM} will order the high-end project Macs, and the 2 extra Mac
2si's (one for TAs, one for HSG).

\section{Upgrading TAs Mac : JIM}

Re: 40.7.6, {\bf JIM} will ensure the TAs Mac Plus is upgraded to 4MB RAM
and a 40MB hard disk.

\section{Unix Machine for Student Use : JIM/SM/LMJM}

Re: 40.6, {\bf JIM} and {\bf SM} will attach a spare 300MB disk to the spare
Sun 3/60, and place the machine in the PC Lab.
Network connectivity is still under consideration.

\par\noindent
Also, {\bf LMJM} will also continue to investigate the BSD386 sources,
getting them to work more reliably.
One of the PC Lab machines may be configured to run BSD386 after the
projects have finished.

\section{X Terminals for Research Students : JIM }

Re: 40.3.2, {\bf JIM} will order 6 mono X terminals : 5 for research
students, and a sixth for the new TA, Wei Yi Fan (paid for from the TAs
equipment allocation).
Mono Sun 3/50s are still the cheapest option, at \pounds 588 including VAT.
Total cost for six: \pounds 3.5K.

\section{X Terminals for 202 : JIM/SM}

{\bf JIM} will order 35 mono Sun 3/50 X terminals
to replace half of the Freedom 110 terminals in room 202.
This should cost about \pounds 21K including VAT.
We have allocated \pounds 35K for this - so the remaining (approx) \pounds 14K
can be used to purchase as many cheap colour X terminals as possible:

{\bf SM} recently estimated \pounds 1035 including VAT
for the cheapest colour solution,
comprising a monitorless Sun 3/60 and a Hitachi colour screen.
He will investigate whether this or a similar offer may be available now,
report back to CSPC, prior to purchasing as many as \pounds 14K can buy.
Are colour PCs competitive?

\section{Flamingo and Pelican replacement : JIM}

{\bf JIM} will order two Sparcstation 10s
(each with 64MB RAM, 1.2GB disk), together costing
\pounds 35K including VAT,
to replace Flamingo and Pelican as mainstream teaching services.
Flamingo and Pelican will not be traded in - we will keep them and maintain
a Sun3 service. One may have to be cannabilised to keep the other running.

\section{More IPXs for Sparc Lab : JIM}

In August, {\bf JIM} will order 10 colour Sparcstation IPXs to fully populate
the Sparc Lab, and upgrade the existing Oaks to 32MB RAM.
Total cost \pounds 70K including VAT.

\section{Annex : JIM}

{\bf JIM} will order 2 x 16-port Micro Annex units, total cost just over 3K
including VAT, in order to replace Gandalf on level 4 and the WPL.
(This money will be forward spent, but will be later recouped by not having to
maintain the Gandalf in those areas.)

\section{SICSTUS Prolog : JIM}

{\bf JIM} will purchase the \pounds 300 site license for SICSTUS Prolog (which
runs on Unix) as requested by KB.

\section{Macintosh Powerbook 170 : JIM}

In August, {\bf JIM} will purchase a Powerbook 170 for use at school visits,
demos and trade fairs, as requested by HK. Cost \pounds 3.2K.
This machine may, when not in use at trade fairs etc, be taken home and used
by members of staff.
Of course, its primary purpose must take precedence over this.

\section{Lab Sources Disk : JIM/SM}

{\bf JIM} will purchase a Wren 8 1.2GB disk drive, costing \pounds 1500
including VAT, to replace the 80MB /vol/labsrc area used by the TAs to store
Lab exercises, automatic submissions, Lab-related packages etc.

\section{Windows 3.1 Upgrades : JIM/SFG}

{\bf JIM} will purchase 17 copies of Microsoft Windows 3.1, at the upgrade cost
of \pounds 35 per copy (excluding VAT). Total cost \pounds 730 including VAT.

\section{Desqview/X : JIM/SFG}

{\bf JIM} will purchase one copy of Desqview/X for SFG to evalaute.
Cost \pounds 165 including VAT.

\section{Upgrading Micro Development Lab : JIM}

{\bf JIM} will upgrade the Micro Development Lab as requested by SMC and
agreed before the meeting.

\par\noindent
That is: allocation of an additional 4M Mac,
allocation of Appletalk card to connect an ImageWriter II,
purchase of 6x1MB SIMMs to upgrade the other 3 Macs up to 4M RAM,
purchase of 3 Appletalk connector kits,
and extension of the Appletalk into the Lab.

\par\noindent
(Cost of these upgrades is unknown)

\section{Exabyte (with compression) : JIM/SM}

{\bf JIM} and {\bf SM} will purchase one of the new Exabyte backup units,
which compresses data to store up to 5GB per 8mm tape.
Cost \pounds 3K including VAT.
