The lists below contain a few general suggestions for writing technical papers and reports. Suggestions for writing research papers: 1. Start with clear drawings, figures, code samples, etc. 2. Always create self contained captions 3. Present, explain, and compare the results to related methods/work 4. For new concepts create clear definitions and show examples 5. Minimal number of abbreviations + define ALL abbreviations in intro. General Technical Writing: 1. Don't try to write the perfect sentence or paragraph. First write down what you want to say; then re-read and correct many times afterwards. 2. NO PASSIVE. 3. use only present tense 4. cut sentences into short pieces, 1-2 lines. 5. remove all words that don't add information. i.e. delete a word and see if the sentence still says the same thing. 6. Remove words like: this, that, it, is, are, will, his, her, here, there,... Instead, do repeat the object of the sentence, use active verbs such as "describes", "transforms", "includes", ...This way the sentence will be easier to read 7. The first sentence of a paragraph defines what the paragraph is about. This allows the quick reader to skip paragraphs by just reading the first sentence.
