Abstract:

Betfair is the world's leading online betting exchange, a concept it has pioneered. Its engineering culture of innovation and experimentation is balanced with world class delivery - this has enabled Betfair to become a leader in its market and an award winning example of IT excellence, attracting some of the world.s leading technology talent.

David will give an overview of the architecture and technology behind Betfair, looking in detail at the various systems which process transactions, cache and serve highly dynamic web pages & data to Betfair's end users. He will explain how service-oriented architecture is used to allow Betfair's developers to maintain a high velocity of change in such a complex environment.

David Jeffery is Chief Software Architect at Betfair, where he has been for the last 6 years. He works on defining Betfair's overall technical architecture and technology strategy, and manages senior technologists. His professional interests include architecture for internet-scale computing, distributed systems, OLTP and utility computing.

Before joining Betfair, David worked as a researcher in Australia and Europe. He was a Research Fellow at Monash University in the Optimization and Constraint Programming research group and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Software) and a PhD in Computer Science from The University Of Melbourne. His PhD research was in the field of logic/functional programming, focussing on type system design, type theory, compiler implementation and software component technologies.
