Skillsets: what you need and how to get it

Sarah Ewen - Technology Group, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

For her sins, Sarah studied at Imperial College, London obtaining an MEng in Software Engineering. While the vast majority of her peers succumbed to the lure of the City and IT/Investment banking industry, Sarah sought out a more interesting career related to open source development. Following 18 months experimenting with open source based business models at an american start up, Sarah googled for new opportunities and found the perfect blend of open source, operating systems and games (rah!) at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, on Linux for PlayStation 2.

Her unique position at SCEE has provided great insight into SCEE's own studios, as well as the industry at large, and the increasing importance of the specialised courses that help prepare graduates for life in the industry. As well as regularly visiting universities to speak to both staff and students (despite religiously avoiding lecturers at Uni herself), Sarah has also participated in some course validation programmes, and lured her colleagues at SCEE into more supporting roles in this area.

Her job title is so confused, it's not even printed on her business cards.
