Building works in Huxley and Blackett

Your access to Huxley and Blackett will be affected by the substantial building works being done this summer to the main entrances. These works are in addition to the major programmes that include:

•  The start of a £1.6 million upgrade of the Huxley toilets;

•  Refurbishment of six of the Huxley Lecture Theatres;

•  Generation of four new Physics offices on Level 2 Blackett;

•  Conversion of Physics' Level 7 Huxley Cleanroom into offices with consequential works on Level 9 Huxley to provide a new EXSS group office suite and to Level 9 Blackett to provide centralised support services for Mathematics and Physics;

•  A major upgrade of Level 0 Huxley laboratories for Quantum Optics;

•  Replacement of the Huxley roof water tanks.

New Entrance Doors to Huxley and Blackett. The College is installing revolving doors at all peripheral building entrances as part of a strategy to enhance security. Two such doors are being installed at the Huxley Queens Gate entrance and one at the Blackett Prince Consort Road entrance. These will provide the out-of-hours swipe card access and should eliminate the security problems that arise from people ‘tailgating'. There will also be a conventional swing door at both entrances that will be open during busier times and during fire evacuations, and, for Huxley, will provide a DDA-compliant access.

Huxley. In addition to the new revolving doors, the whole entrance area is being refurbished. This will include moving the sliding doors that currently open onto Queens Gate and using them to replacing the swing doors at the foot of the stairs. A new Receptionist Desk is being, which will face the external doors, and the whole area is being redecorated.

Blackett. In addition to installing the new revolving door, the whole of the Level 2 foyer is being redecorated and improvements made to the Receptionists Desk.

How do these Building Works Affect You?

Blackett. The works to install the revolving door will start on Monday 23 July and all the Blackett works are scheduled to be completed by Friday 17 August. The primary works only affect the east of the two double doors (the one that is currently broken). This door will be hoarded off, but you will continue to be able to use the currently functioning door. The Blackett works should therefore only cause you minimal inconvenience. There are no adverse implications concerning Fire Evacuations.

Huxley. The works to install the revolving doors will start on Monday 13 August and all the foyer works are scheduled to be completed by Friday 21 September (i.e. before the start of term). Both the Level 2 exit from the stairwell and the main stairs leading to Level 3 will be sealed off. This will mean that there will be no access from Queens Gate, and no access to the Clore Lecture Theatre, the Mathematics' computer rooms (Rms 212 and 215), or to Computing's Level 2 Computer Suite.

•  Alternative computing arrangements are in place made for the Maths UGs;

•  The Department of Computing will access their Suite through the north door;

•  There are no conferences etc in the Clore Lecture Theatre.

During the period of these works, you will be able to access Huxley from either the Walkway or from Blackett.

Fire Evacuation: There will be a changed evacuation route for people on the upper floors of the Huxley Building who use the stairs that open out onto the Level 2 foyer. The Fire Officer has agreed that this route will be sealed off at Level 3 and that people will vacate the building via Level 3 and onto the Walkway. The Department of Computing will vacate their Level 2 suite using the stairs to Level 1 rather than through the Level 2 foyer.
