Student Representative Election Manifestos
First Year
1.Mohammad Katani mk1108
I would like to nominate myself to be a year rep. I am a first year student and currently registered for the G400 course.I attended Rugby School for the last two years of my school career. After only one year at the school, I was selected as a school prefect by the Head Master due to my commitment to the school and its societies. During my second year at Rugby I was given the position of Secretary for three different societies (Computing, Science and Philosophy). Being in charge of all three societies I had to arrange many events, organise dates for meeting and communicate a lot with pupils to find out about their interests. I gained a lot of experience in many different areas like time management and communication skills. As a school prefect I was also in charge of the Computing and IT development of the school (from the student side). This required me putting forward pupils' suggestions and issues with the school's Internet policies, possible future developments etc. During my final year at school I also managed to arrange a couple of high standard talks given by people like Professor Warrick(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Warwick) and Dr. Andy Stanford-Clark from IBM, both being very busy people. As the result of my hard work and commitment towards IT and Computing I was personally invited to give a talk at the Independent Professional Development about my IT project and IT at my school. These are just a few examples how seriously I take my responsibilities and the high standard which I set myself. I always worked hard to achieve the best possible result and I think these characteristics of mine make me to a suitable candidate for the position. I believe that I can act as a strong link between the students and the staff side.
2.Hoi Yeung hy208
Firstly, I have advantages in languages. I am a Hong Kong citizen, but my background is very special. I took my middle and high school in mainland China rather than HK, because the education is better. I can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese very fluently. This might help because I can communicate without gaps with both Cantonese speakers and Mandarin speakers.
Secondly, I am confident about my interpersonal skill. I was a vice-president of the Student Union in my A-level school. I co-operated with my fellows well, and we operated many activities. Here is some examples: 1. Chrismas Party. 2. Regular Volunteering Activities in a local homeless animals centre. 3. Basketball Competition. 4. Build and run a student website. We also helped the students with many problem, like inviting the senior students to give lecture to junior one about 'How to Studying', and reporting the general difficulties to teachers so had some operation in timetable. After the experience I learnt how to co-operate with people, being patient and communication skills. I had a lot of fun, and became mature. That's no 'I' in 'Team'.
Thirdly, I have enough academic quality. I started learning programming in my primary school. After I learned C, Pascal, VB and some ASP.net 2.0 and SQL server. I led a couple of programming teams before, producing some softwares about data management and websites. I also did well in my Alevel period. I did further math, math, physics and chemistry, and I graduated with a very good result: full A, with full As in every component. So I am able to help my classmate, either in computing, or in math.
Last but not least, I have a strong will to become a year rep. To me, helping fellows to co-operate is not a job, but fun mostly. I like the feeling of being needed by others, and I am sure everybody does. If I can be selected as the Year Rep, I will do my best to help everyone in my class. Making sure nobody is feeling difficulty about the arranging, nobody is falling become, and every teaching staff is happy about our class. And most importantly, always have a smile on my face.
3.Shruti Hari sh2808
Hey!
I am still trying to figure out why, but I guess I would like to nominate myself !!
Ok, first of all, I think it is important you know who I am … my name is Shruti Hari (which I know is hard to pronounce) and I'm in my Undergrad 1st year. I'm doing Computing, or more specifically, Software Engineering - the MEng program.
Now why do I think I qualify for this ? Well, to begin with I’m hyper organized (yes, quite weird for a college student, but I think I got that from my mom !!). I would love to add that I am smart (after all, I am at Imperial !!) but then you would think I am boasting !!! For someone my age coming from a land full of mystique, I have done quite a few things like leading CSR activities and events, going on a space camp by NASA in Alabama, apart from maintaining a detailed log of all my travels, who knows, one day that may form the basis for my first novel !
If I had to describe myself I would say that I love meeting new people, being in-charge of things (makes me feel "responsible") and if I'm not typing away furiously at my keyboard, I'm usually dancing, travelling, reading or shopping (I understand, which girl doesn't?).
Being a fresher, I can see how impactful the Year Representative role can be - being able to consolidate thoughts, set directions and facilitate events so as to make the stay at Imperial a unique experience for everyone. Especially for those who want to reach out and need a moment of help and assistance. I am not sure if it helps but the fact that I am off alcohol actually means that I am sober most of the time, when I take decisions :)
Second Year
1.Robert Jan Kopaczyk rjk07
My name is Robert Jan Kopaczyk and I would like to be a student representative for the second year. I think that there are issues with some aspects of the course, and I'd like to work for these issues to be resolved. For example, some lecture courses last year were too fast-paced and many students were not able to follow them. Should this be the case again with this year's lecture courses, I would try my best to improve the teaching experience for all of us, such as by arranging additional revision lectures around exam time and more tutorial sessions. Additionally, students can easily approach me and discuss their own concerns, since I can often be found in the labs. I will then discuss the important points with the responsible members of staff.
2. Sandish Askurn ja107
Heya Guys,
I am Sandish Askurn. I know that most of you already know me due to the fact that I was a year rep last year. It was indeed a great pleasure for me to work for us last year in an effort to facilitate our studies within the department. This is mainly why I am seriously considering doing the same job with the same determination and honesty as the previous year. I assure you that I will try my best to extend deadlines in case of urgent need and also try to help you in any other way I can for e.g academic, personal, welfare etc. If you are not aware, I am the Doc Soc secretary this year. Hence, it will be an easier way to help you in solving problems since I will be in regular contact with the lecturers and seniors. I would be very grateful if you decide to vote for me as year rep. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
Cheers,
Sandish Askurn3. Raoul Gabriel Urma ru107
Hello World ! I'm Raoul-Gabriel, basically the guy with the heavy French accent. Like everyone here (you know you are) I'm a g33k reading xkcd and bash.org.I'm very motivated to be year rep this year for several reasons.
First off, I have a few projects that I think could benefit second year students, as well as the others. I would like to establish a serious community website and forum for the students, featuring tutorial articles written by students - with teacher feedback on the forum - that would supplement the tutorial sessions. Summaries for exams or other useful computing knowledge not covered in lectures could also be posted; for example GUI library tutorials, kernel module writing for FreeBsd, web crawler in ruby ...Secondly, I'm not satisfied with how things were handled last year. As a year rep I would like more transparency between the students and the staff so the students can know how every meeting goes. Updates should be delivered much more often.
Thirdly, I will naturally arrange additional lectures to cover material near exam time, extend coursework deadline during busy times, raise any problems with exams or assessments with member of staff.
All in all, my main goal is to boost the relations between students, and have them help each other to the benefit of everyone.
4. James Henderson jh507
I am well suited to the role because I believe that I am reliable, assertive and eager to help my course-mates. After a year on the course, I am confident that I can understand the vast majority of issues that can come up, being a student myself... Please feel free to contact me with any problems you might have - no problem is too small!
Third Year
1.Hakan Ozbay ho06
I want to be year rep because I think I possess the necessary skills to excel in this role.
In previous years I believe some year reps have lacked the integration, approachability and sociability factors that I value and will offer as year rep. Being able to form a good bridge between the department and students requires a good relationship with the students first to get a flavour of what they want. As someone who keeps in daily contact with not only the majority of students in 3rd year, but with students across different years, I maintain an honest and congenial relationship with them, thereby empathising with their changing opinions, which is why I would be suitable to convey these opinions as year rep.
Therefore not only will I provide a familiar face, but also a beneficial helping hand as I share a lot of the opinions of students, as well as having a few ideas of my own, such as trying to introduce the notion of video recording lectures, allowing students to watch them at any time from the internet. I will always put forward all ideas, complaints and feedback to the relevant authority provided they are plausible and have the interest of the overall student body at heart.
2. Alykhan Tejani at1106
My name is Alykhan Tejani, I was one of the year reps last year. In my manifesto last year i promised lockers for DoC and we now have a student locker room, this year I am going to try and get a kettle or a microwave or both for the common room and I am going to try an up our print quota.
