Helping in Surgery Sessions

(For UTAs not involved with PPT/PMT sessions)

Where and When are they?

The surgery sessions will take place twice a week initially (on Tuesday and Thursday) in room 344 between 12.00 and 13.00.

What is the purpose of the surgery sessions?

They are intended for students who are having problems with the programming concepts taught in the lecture courses. They are intended for students who may be falling behind because they haven't fully understood the material taught in the programming lecture courses. They will perform a different function to the PPT meetings and lab sessions as the focus is on programming concepts rather than problem solving and program design. At the sessions more time should be allowed for individual explanation than is available in the labs or PPT meetings. Attendance for students is voluntary although students who are having difficulties with programming concepts are recommended to attend.

What should I do?

You should ask the student what concept or area of the programming course thay are having problems with and then give them an explanation so that they understand. Students should bring their course notes or other materials with them. Unlike the labs or PPT meetings there should be no time constraints within the session and you should take as long as necessary with each student. We will monitor the number of students attending and provide more helpers if necessary.

When will I be doing surgeries?

All UTAs who are not PPT helpers will be expected to do surgery sessions and Peter Cutler will produce a rota. You will probably do a surgery once every two or three weeks.

How do I make a claim for payment?

You should use the tutorial support system as described in the UTA introductory page.
