DoC Professor leads team to help British athletes achieve gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.

A team headed by Professor Guang Zhong Yang has been awarded a substantial grant to maximise the potential of GB athletes in their quest for gold at the future 2012 Olympic Games. The research will bring together the fields of Computing, Electronics, Bioengineering, Medicine and Sport and will focus on gathering useful body sensing measurements to help us understand the biology of athletic performance.
The proposing team have already contributed to a range of novel, low cost, miniaturised wireless devices and prototypes for sports and healthcare and recent advances in sensor design, MEMS integration, and ultra-low power micro-processor and wireless technologies will all contribute to the success of this research.
Their aim is to place the UK at the forefront of pervasive sensing in sport and to promote its wider application in public life-long health, wellbeing and healthcare. The programme represents a unique synergy of leading UK research in body sensor networks (BSN), biosensor design and sports performance monitoring and equipment design. It is hoped that not only will this secure a competitive advantage for UK athletes; it will also have more general applications such as gaining insights into improving the health and wellbeing of the population at large.
