It is expected that most students will complete the MSc in either three or four years. A typical study pattern would be to complete the taught modules over three years and to take one year for the project, although other patterns are possible.
Contact your personal tutor or your final year project supervisor. In their absence request a reference from the Department's Senior Tutor or similar.
To a certain extent coursework is up to the lecturers for each individual module. You should expect to have at least two assessed courseworks for each module. Each module will also normally have 10 hours of unassessed coursework or tutorials.
For most courses examinations will be in April/May. Intensive courses may have specially scheduled examinations at different times.
Each taught course module requires about thirty hours of contact time and at least a similar amount of private study time. In addition, there is assessed coursework and an examination.
The pass mark for a taught course module is 50% which must be achieved in both coursework and examination. The pass mark for the project is also 50%. In case a student does not obtain the pass mark at the first attempt in the examination or coursework of a taught module, (s)he is entitled to resit the failed component in the next calendar year. Similarly, if a pass mark is not obtained at the first attempt in the project the student may resubmit once in the following year. A distinction will be awarded to a student who obtains distinction standard in all components.
You will be advised by email of the deadlines for choices of modules. However, you should agree with your Personal Tutor a plan of studies in advance for the duration of the whole MSc.
Under the current regulations for this degree, you are entitled to have a second attempt at the exam the next time the exam is set. If you fail on your second attempt you may be asked to withdraw from the M.Sc. altogether. Note that courses are updated and each exam is given on the contents of the last taught course. Therefore, it is up to you to catch up on the new material. Also, note that absences from an exam are normally permitted only on medical grounds and must be supported by appropriate medical documentation. An absence which is not justified will be counted as a failure.
