Refurbishment Plan

Immediately after the award of the refurbishment grant, the design team led by the Hancock Ward Company started to draw out all the plans. The management ream identified several key requirements to be fulfilled

  • Flexible use of space to allow for future expansion

  • Maximize natural lighting

  • Adopt an inspiring modern design

These form the basis of the current open-plan and high ceiling layout of the laboratory. To maximize the use of space, the old lift shaft which is no longer in service was decided to be removed. After a survey and subsequent removal of asbestos, the final drawings and specifications was released at the end of May, 2000. The contract was tendered by several construction companies, and Bovis Leillott won the project.

To ensure minimal disturbance to staff and students, the project was strictly controlled by the Chief Architect and ICSTM Estate Team led by Geoff Owen, ensuring noisy and heavy demolition works were scheduled at weekends.
