@*************************************************************************
                   READ THIS DESCRIPTION!
This is kept under RCS simply to allow the taking of "snapshots" of it
and comparing it with earlier snapshots in a simple and uniform way.
These snapshots are also a form of backup if I make a complete mess of
the option boxes etc! Therefore, the file should be kept in the state
known as "checked out locked" (otherwise it will be read-only, and will
              cause netscape some headaches!).

@retreated further to my "alternative local" version of Crit for a view of
my home page. (This is the rather ad hoc "running as non-privileged" version of
running Crit locally as a CGI-script, which does at least work,
whereas - for whatever mysterious reason! - the version running as me
has been broken since Oct 2003, with "Error: bind" which I don't understand
and don't know how to investigate with a view to fixing.)

@Ah well... Crit (crit.org) is no more! The domain still exists, but it's
some kind of placeholding commercial crap with endless pop-ups and the like.
Not the sort of thing one wants as a broswer starting page!
So... retreated to my local version of Crit for a view of my home page.
(Note that this doesn't currently work either! It's been broken for over
a year now, with "Error: bind" which I don't understand and don't know how
to investigate with a view to fixing. But at least it just cleanly fails,
whereas the commercial "crit.org" does its blasted pop-ups etc!)

@turned off usage of the IMAP IDLE command (which lets the client sit back and
wait for the server to push information about new messages and whatnot):
I find this a bit dizzying, and would much prefer to only get updates when
"doing something that deserves them" (like re-entering an IMAP folder after
leaving it for a while), as an explicit client-side action.

(I suspect *this* is what made it maintain a connection to the IMAP server
for an over-long time, a la previous revisions! So, hopefully this will
 now be suppressed.)

Plus changed back from "imap2" to "imap" as IMAP server - the two names are
now aliases for the same machine, so presumably CSG has now successfully
entered the "desired world" where a new physical machine can slip into
the same logical domain name slot, a la what happens with "www", "smtp",
 "news", etc.

@tried, as best I can, to turn off "jazzy" features that I find more of a
hindrance than a help, such as the attempt to give mail messages a
junk status (it's far too eager to declare messages junk) and the
auto-completion of e-mail sending addresses as you type them in
(it's far too eager to make wrong guesses). I don't know if this will
suppress its maintaining a connection to the IMAP server for an over-long
time, a la previous revision, but turning these things off is a good
 thing to do anyway!

Plus:
 * got rid of "[mark as] junk" button in mail window, and managed to restore
"file", "print" and "stop" buttons which vanished all by themselves!
 * some fairly inscrutable but harmless-looking changes captured in this

the files being presented as IMAP folders.] Is there any way to suppress this?)

1.86
log
@tried changing to "imap2" as IMAP server - the default server "imap" is old
and overloaded, and can give actual errors (empty message bodies, messy
failure dressed as success when copying to local folders, etc), not just
mere slowness. CSG hopes eventually to make the fast new machine currently
 called "imap2" become the new default IMAP server (i.e. be called "imap");
but this is proving more difficult than you'd think - some clients are
too clever for their own good and detect the server change and get confused
about things like certificates, cached data, etc. So for now, the setup
examples on the various web pages still guide you to give a server name of
"imap" as always - this being correct for the "desired world" where a new
physical machine can slip into the same logical domain name slot, a la
what happens with "www", "smtp", "news", etc - but since we're not currently
in that "desired world", CSG is recommending imap2 "semi-informally"
(by word of mouth, insertion of it into student setup files, etc)
as IMAP server to use if you get problems with the one still currently
 called imap.

Phew! So now you know. :-)

Plus:
 * absorbed a whole lot of clutter related to "Enigmail" encryption
(which I don't want to use, but which Mozilla keeps offering and you
have to struggle a bit to *not* use!)

 * printer and helper application (and inscrutable!) changes captured in

(Not really an ideal setup as it stands - in particular, the IMAP server seems

even if I manually edit away anything that looks like it indicates such a

one adjusts them via Netscape's dividing lines etc, they seem to dance about
in a way only tangentially related to what you see on the screen!)

Rationale: the less well-known "web.doc.ic.ac.uk" domain name is not
maintained to the same thorough extent as "www.doc.ic.ac.uk".
For example, just recently it broke by resolving to a defunct web server
host - one that no longer has an http daemon. Mark Dawson did repair the
domain name table when I pointed this out to him, but he also said he
strongly recommends people forget about "web.doc.ic.ac.uk" and standardize
their usage on "www.doc.ic.ac.uk". The trend to "www.<enterprise-domain-name>"
is simply too well-established - "you can't buck the trend".
Which is a shame, since Dave Yost's point (reproduced below) was a good one!

[from New Scientist 25/10/1997 p58:]

@changed pop-server name to "pop" now that Netscape no longer has a wrapper
script which changes this to "pop-ug". (Previously the only way to keep it
at "pop" was not to *call* it "pop" but rather "fox" - the machine the
nickname "pop" maps to. This was presumably not really ideal, since after
all the whole point of the nickname system is to let the underlying
machines for various services be changed around when necessary.)
(Incidentally Netscape's method of recording that the pop-server name
is "pop" is to *remove altogether* the record saying its name!
Presumably this is because "pop" is Netscape's default assumption here.)

increased history expiration from its default 180 days to 10 years(!)

the change I tried before, as strongly recommended by Mark Dawson.
As before, it's not that pop-ug doesn't work, it's just that it's slow

everybody. - But when you use the *name* "pop" for fox,
the wrapper script for Netscape detects the name "pop" and changes it

@Well! Wouldn't you know, it *has* forcibly changed the pop-server back

seems perfectly serviceable, and after all it's used by hundreds of students.

why it would have been thought desirable for the wrapper script for Netscape
 to behave in this way.)

@changed back to a straightforward ~/.newsrc arrangement,
i.e. the .newsrc file "back out in the goldfish bowl".

Previous regime was like this:

"The directories here are for storing a separate .newsrc file for each
news server. Otherwise, i.e. with a shared .newsrc file for all news servers,
switching between news servers would render the article numbers meaningless
 and wrong!

Thus, when changing news server, remember to also change news directory!
"

But then I noticed this:

"---Actually, the menu option to open a new news server, *without* changing
which one counts as one's "main" news server, seems adequate to cover
casual nipping over to other servers (and a special ".newsrc-<server>"
file is created, presumably precisely to avoid the article number problem).
So, thanks to this menu option, there's unlikely in practice to be much
    need for the one-directory-per-news-server arrangement.
But at least the facility is now there! :-)
"

(These quotes are taken from the README-file of my previous regime.)

And now, looking back over the whole pattern of usage, I've decided
the whole regime is an over-elaborate waste of time, and the .newsrc file
can jolly well go "back out in the goldfish bowl" and stay there!

Whew! :-)

  * default when sending mail / posting news is Bcc: to self
  * suppressed the default POP3 check of new mail every 10 minutes
(it doesn't seem to work, at least the promised "!" next to the little
bottom right-hand envelope never appeared; and it seems to put an
awful strain on the POP3 server, by running the actual Unix child
process "popper" (as me) every 10 minutes, instead of (for example)
tcsh's and xbiff's lightweight approach to checking for new mail.)
  * gave home directory as NEWSRC_DIR instead of the stateless /dev/null.
Plus other changes:
 * asked to perform full anonymous FTP protocol, i.e. supplying of
   e-mail address as password
 * accepted a font change (this has happened all by itself, and it doesn't
seem to make any visible difference to anything, so...what the hell!).

log
@OK, superstition-erasing time!
Changed back to revision 1.13(!), because:
 * there's nothing wrong with /dev/null as a news directory
(the error dialogue was, I think, part of the news-option-changing bug),
and it has the positive advantage of making news stateless across
re-invocations of Netscape, which although frowned on, is what I prefer!
 * it definitely *is* a bug that you can't save the choice of showing
all news messages, rather than just unread ones. Given this, and given
that there may be other unwanted meanings to the strange intermittent
line-change it *did* save instead, it's best just to put that line
   back the way it was.
 * finally, since the explicitly saved geometry was just the default,
it can jolly well go back the way it was too!

Phew!!! :-)

@made up a hidden-away news directory for Netscape's use,
by analogy with the hidden-away mail directory
(/dev/null seemed a bit too much for it: it gave an error dialogue box
  when changing various news-related options!)
chose to show all news messages, rather than just unread ones
(however, it seems not to pick this up on re-invocations of Netscape,
  and was even intermittent in changing a line in this file;
and for good measure the line it *did* eventually change doesn't
really sound like a plausible name for this option! ---is this a bug?)
geometry of news window has been saved explicitly, but it's still just
 the default.

@Aaaargh!!! The automatic upgrade from Netscape 1.1N to Netscape 2.0

@new snapshot: (personalized from) CSG's installed version 1.1N.
Changes:
 * some record entries come and go, or have their names changed
 * memory cache size 2000K -> 3000K
 * preamble waffle changed a bit.
Includes the following personalizations:
 * newsrc directory set to /dev/null, to avoid stupid .newsrc behaviour
on multiple invocations [similar to personalization in previous revision]
 * loads up to 1000000 articles per newsgroup instead of 100
(IC DoC is *not* a slow-modem site!!!)
 * verifies document headers with server on every access, to avoid memory
cache getting out of date (default of once per session is stupid if
you leave your Netscape running for weeks!)
 * disk cache suppressed by saying it's zero size, as in previous revision.
