Its network connection seemed to fail under high student load, and so its student logins have been disabled. Further, it had to be kept going continuously as a staff machine, since it had an important staff database on it (or something!), and so didn't get taken down for an operating system upgrade - the result being it'll require major surgery to bring it back into the Teaching Sparc fold even if its network connection is one day judged safe under high student load. * motmot seemed to have the same network connection problem as kea. So, as on kea, its student logins have been disabled. However, it's had its operating system upgrade, and it still supports indirect student access (via CGI scripts), so it seems sensible to regard it as a Teaching Sparc (just!): if one logs into it, one finds the expected environment. * finch was given a different kind of network connection, so that at least one powerful "CPU server" Teaching Sparc was still available. So finch is still a full, straightforward Teaching Sparc. @ text @d18 1 @ 1.8 log @added fox as a staff machine (CPU server), on a par with hen, quail and swan. (Note that fox is a PC i386 running freebsd, and hen and quail are Solaris machines - only swan is an "honorary Teaching Sparc", and even it seems to often have older versions of a lot of the software.) (fox *is* running the "mailfilter-type" stuff as the relevant user after all, but it's not literally mailfilter - it's a new and awfully different "Exim Mail Transport Agent", revolving around ~/.forward files.) @ text @d12 1 a12 1 ### finch kea motmot d18 1 a18 1 ### #fox hen quail swan @ 1.7 log @added hen and quail as staff machines (i.e. CPU servers), on a par with swan.
