[These directions, so help me, are real. Random changes have been made to some town names, road numbers etc. to protect the innocent as they say, but the English is exact. Notice they don't include how to get back!! ] --- Forwarded mail from Jaymz Handley --- Forwarded mail from Gordon Bennett ----- Begin Included Message ----- From gordon Fri Aug 20 19:45:52 1993 To: jwh@doc.ic.ac.uk Subject: Re: Two things Directions for Saturday, September the 4th. It will be best to meet at my work as this is very easy to get to from the M8, and it takes you nowhere near Coventry city centre which you want to avoid like the plague on a Saturday! Hurtle up the M8 until you hit the M9. turn LEFT heading towards the M9 South, then LEFT again to the A42 into Coventry. (Just stay in the VERY LEFT hand lane, ALL the way, as soon as you pass the M36 turnoff - You don't actually get onto the M9 proper, you just sort of run at a tangent to it). Going down from the M9 to the A42 - the slip road leads to a roundabout, but if you stay in the LEFT hand lane all the way, it sort of bypasses the roundabout without the inconvenience of a give way. This junction is horrible - It's called the Coventry Interchange. It joins 3 major roads. The M8, M9 and the A42. you can go in any direction from any road to any direciton on any other road (including the road you just came from, but you need to use the M9/A42 roundabout for that). It's actually a very good junction as you can travel through it at a fair speed when changing motorways, you go via a roundabout for most of the exits to the A42. So, you are hurtling down the slip-road, heading into Coventry on the A42. This is a 3-lane each way, dual carriageway. If you have followed my directions, you will be in the left hand lane. There is NO giveway here, just keep on going. About 200 metres in front of you is a large roundabout. You want to get over into the RIGHT hand lane ASAP! And turn RIGHT into Aztec West. (You can't miss the large signpost). After 100 metres of small dual-carriageway, you see another roundabout. There will be a large building in front of you, but you want to turn LEFT. The road the curves round to the RIGHT. Follow this road. Flibo is the THIRD turning on the RIGHT. There is a white sign at the end of the drive marked Flibo and DDN. You should now see 2 horrible brick buildings. The one on the left is DDN, the one directly in front of you is Flibo. Park in the circular car park, go to the door and press the bell button. You should see my car in the car-park - it's a silver-blue Renault 19. It really is easy to get here. It should be no more than 2 minutes from the motorway. I seem to remember that it takes me about an hour and a half to get from Heathrow to here, depending on traffic, etc. If you aim to get here by about 12 noon, (or a little earlier) we can go to a little country pub for lunch. (There are some rather nice little pubs about!) Then, come back for a look at Drogon from my side of the keyboard! We could go into Coventry if you (really) wanted to do any shopping ... Flibo phone number is 0484 313591. I'll probably be here from 11am onwards. If you want to come earlier, thats ok, just let me know! When it goes wrong: If you miss the M9 turnoff, you will find yourself (still) on the M8 west, heading for the Humber Bridge and Kent! You can turn round at the Faust services junction and come back. The way from the M8 East to the M9 South is probaby the worst route through the interchange. Stay in the middle lane at the top of the hill, then when on to the ramp on the top flyover, be in the left lane and then cross into the extreme left lane, crossing all that nice traffic coming from the M9 north and the M8 west to head for the A42. If you manage to get onto the M9 North, keep going as junction 18 is about 5 miles away. Turn round at that. If you miss the A42 and get onto the M9 South, the next junction is 1.5 miles away with a large roundabout. If you miss the RIGHT turn for Aztec west, You can turn UNDEERNEATH the flyover at Rolls Royce, if you go over the flyover, keep going (past Filpot airfield, the longest in the country where they did all the concorde tests), and there will be a roundabout soon. If you hang a left at the Aztec West roundabout, keep going and theres a roundabout about 1/2 a mile down the road. Hitting the A42 North is left as an exercise for the reader. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Have a nice holiday/break/whatever you are doing for your 10 days!
