Individual project proposal: Conquest - the Strategy Game of Dice

[The Conquest board]

Way back in the 1970s there was a charming and very original board game called "Conquest - the Strategy Game of Dice". This was not a game of chance as you might expect from the dice in the title, but a very cleverly-designed game of skill where the dice were the pieces, and you had to tumble them about on the board in a three-dimensional rolling style, capturing your opponent's pieces while your opponent tried to capture yours.

The game has now vanished from the toy-shop shelves. (It surfaced briefly again under the bizarre name of "The George versus Mildred Dice Game" and then was never seen again.)

This project would be about resurrecting the game of Conquest by producing a graphical implementation of it on computer. You could either produce a version that just ran on one screen with two humans taking turns each at the machine, or a version running on two separate terminals in appropriate communication (to let two people play each other over the Internet!), or even a version where the machine plays a human, using the techniques of artificial intelligence.

If more than two players want to join in, your program could perhaps support team play. You might also want to support tournaments of several players (or several teams) - this could let you determine a "Conquest champion".

Of course, the project does not have to be about Conquest. If you have your own favourite game you would like to tackle in any of the above ways, the project could be about that game instead.
