June 2009 – June 2010 Perl Software Engineering internship at Lokku, London :
Lokku, founded in 2006, is the company behind the property search engine Nestoria, present in 4 countries before my internship, and currently in 7. Most of its code is written in Perl, using for the rest Bash, HTML/Javascript and Apache/MySQL. It possesses about 15 servers dealing with frontend, backend, ETL and click recording.
My responsibilities and the complexity of my projects increased with time :
Unit testing, code cleaning and debugging using the Test::More framework and Perl debugger :
writing test modules to deduplicate code
setting up automated test runs at each SVN check-in
setting up Perl::Critic test systems to progressively establish coding best practices
Taking part in daily operational tasks and adding new customers to ETL
Building the geodata files (used in the auto-suggest and for geocoding) necessary to launch Nestoria in Australia
Profiling and simplifying code for geobuilds to decrease the run time for all countries from 2 days down to 12 hours
Participating in the intern recruitment process, selecting CVs and doing first interviews
Training the new intern during his first weeks and writing his project specifications
Leading the launch of Nestoria in France, as well as paving the way for Brazil and India.
