History
During the four and a half centuries since their discovery, the
Galápagos Islands have had a rich and varied history. Buccaneers,
whalers, fur seal hunters, scientists, soldiers, convicts,
fishermen, farmers and homesteaders have all left their mark on
the islands, their plants and wildlife. In History, we investigate
the adventures of the First Explorers -- including the
pirates, navies and navigators who "put the Galápagos
on the map" -- and take a look at Darwin's Visit and
the era in which it took place. We enter the 20th Century
with the era of Rediscovery and Tourism, leading up to
the creation of the Galápagos National Park in 1959.
Since the history of the Galápagos is intertwined with
that of its mainland neighbor, we also explore Ecuador's History,
itself a rich and compelling saga of South America's rise to independence,
with a colorful cast of Inca warriors, Spanish conquistadors,
Amazon explorers and the fighters for liberation. |
