Animals Many species of Antarctic wildlife are unique to the southern
region. Each of the major species that inhabits the Antarctic
south of the Antarctic Convergence shares a variety of adaptations
that enables them to survive in the harsh environment. They all
take their food from the sea that surrounds the continent; indeed,
most live at the shore, although some breed on land.
The major groups of animals are the birds (particularly the sea
birds and penguins), and the mammals (the seals and whales). All
Antarctic mammals are marine, and they include twelve species
of whales and five species of true or "earless" seals. |
