Richard Bangs

Producer, Correspondent

The name Richard Bangs has become virtually synonymous with adventure writing in the United States over the past 20 years. An international river explorer and award-winning author of some ten books, Richard has also proven himself a media innovator with films, videos, CD-ROMs and now internet sites to his credit. With TerraQuest, he has positioned his company Mountain Travel-Sobek at the forefront of the new media explosion in the World Wide Web.

Best known for pioneering river rafting on more than 35 remote waterways around the world, Bangs parlayed those experiences in his first book Rivergods in 1985. A subsequent title, Riding the Dragon's Back, was awarded the Lowell Thomas Award for Best Travel Book of 1989 for its chronicle of the first descents down China's historic Yangtze. Along with these and other books on adventure travel, Bangs has helped write or produce in several other media, including the television documentary River of the Red Ape, the first interactive Photo CD The Adventure Disc, and the new CD-ROM The Ultimate Guide to Adventure Travel, produced as an interactive catalog of Mountain Travel-Sobek's trip offerings.

In 1994, Mountain Travel-Sobek became the first adventure travel company with a World Wide Web presence, at http://www.mtsobek.com -- a site which features e-mail postcards and a complete catalog on the Web. As a leader in exploration, travel, internet marketing, and environmental issues, Richard has written and spoken extensively on these and other topics. He lives in the Oakland, California suburb of Montclair with his wife and collaborator Pamela Roberson, and their young son Walker.
