# The year is 2027. The Ribena Crisis has raged for over 20 years. The #
# Ribenaberry colony, who were placed in exotic Penge for its climatic #
# suitability, mysteriously vanished in 2007 and up until now remained #
# officially lost. Just a few hours ago, their situation was uncovered #
# in the intolerable environment which is Milton Keynes. It is *VITAL* #
# to free them as soon as possible. The entire colony are very heavily #
# comatosed, and will require a violent awakening to ever produce very #
# tasty fruity drinks ever again..... #
# #
# You are veteran commando Ben Brooks, ribena guru since 1997, who had #
# escaped a similar ribena based coma, publicised in The Cheddar, June #
# 1996. Your weapons are the two most suited, and technologically fine #

# So.. you, Ben have been launched to Milton Keynes, observing all the #
# necessary health regulations, to liberate the berries, with your kit #
# of weapons above. Most berries need just one scwish-hit to be awoken #
# from their coma. Others may require several charges from the scwish, #
# and some sad cases will be permanently vegatated, after twenty years #
# of cruel conditions. WCT are desparately working as we speak, making #
# enhancements to aid your mission; there's the Fluffly Latex Bendable #
# Banana Laser Enhancement (FLIBBLE), also the new Gigantic Inflatible #
# Bendy Banana Elongation Reactor (GIBBER), and other developing tools #
# to aid your progress. Good luck commando. #

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                          2. The Installation Guide
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Compatability: all parts of this game will run under Win95, Win 3.1, or
(BEST) native DOS. From Win95, set it to run in a full window, but don't
blame me if the sound jerks now and then, because that's not my fault -
it shouldn't happen in DOS! Windows NT should be fine, although whether
or not sound cards work properly in NT, I'm afraid I don't know!

WINDOWS 95 WARNING: on some machines, doing a 'Shut down to DOS mode'
from Win95 causes problems with the sound, which no-one can explain - it
works for a couple of seconds and shuts down. However, if you reboot
your Win95 machine, and press F8, when it says 'Starting Windows 95' and
choose Command Prompt, and then run the necessary bits below - mouse.com
and any sound drivers, then it should work excellently.

     i) Unzip the ZIP file - which you've already done if you're reading this.
Use a directory such as C:\WCT\RIBENA - for convenience, especially if
you are planning, or have already installed some other WCT components.

ii) Run MOUSE.COM - this does not come with the game, but you will need
to run a mouse driver for DOS programs. If you don't know where to
find one, then type DIR C:\MOUSE.COM /S, to try and locate one. All
computers should come with one! (If you're running from Win95 DOS
         PROMPT, you won't need this)

iii) Run SETUP.EXE - this configures Ribena for your sound card. You will
be asked for the address (220), interrupt (5), DMA Channel (1) and
the frequency of sound (44100, unless you have a slower computer).
The values above are most common, but not at all definite!
If in doubt, type 'SET' from your DOS prompt, and look for text such
         as 'SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1' - the A is the address, I the interrupt
and D the DMA channel. If that line doesn't appear when you type
SET, then try 220, 5, 1 - that's quite common. Otherwise, you should
be able to find out the settings from your sound-card manual.

iv) ROCK AND ROLL! Run RIBENA.EXE for the game, and RIBEDIT for the level
editor. (RIBENA.HI, RIBENA.INI and SOUND.CFG will automatically be
         created).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                          3. The Game
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the title page, press P to play, H for hi-scores, O for options
or G for the gameplan, (or the left mouse button starts as well).

Options: Sound (on/off) - selects sound effects during the game.
Players (1-8) - number of players in the game.
Level - allows you to enter a level password.
Game speed (1-7) - The relative speed of the scwish.
Names - Enter the names of the players in the
game (used to automatically update the
                                    hi-score table as well).

Playing the game: a warning screen appears, showing the player name
and the password for that level. Move the mouse to control your wibble,
left mouse button to launch the scwish. Up and down arrows control
the bendiness of your banana, and the left and right arrow keys control
which of your current range of gadgets to activate. The left mouse
button is used to activate any gadget you may have, and the right button
speeds things up slightly - useful if the ball is stuck in an enclosed
area, and want to hurry things up a bit.

Knock out all the berries, and try and catch them in the banana for
extra points. Make use of the angled bananas for controlling the
scwish. Some berries may require several hits, others may be fixed in
place, (see section 1). WCT gadgets are generally hidden under berries
for safe keeping, and will fall down from the sky. Since typing the
first section, WCT have invented an 'banana bonus' to give you an
extra life, (you have 3 scwishs, and you lose one if you miss it...)
and also a nuclear bomb, to blitz the level, liberating all the
berries in one swoop. There are other gadgets that WCT are working on,
although the strange management choice to put ANDY on the design team
has had certain side effects here and there....

Warning: the scwish will bounce off gadgets, and falling berries,
so you'll need to be careful.... The scwish has an auto-escape
feature, so if it gets stuck between berries, it will eventually
free itself, or will return itself to your banana for another launch.
Similarly, kit has been known for the scwish to get caught up in
falling objects, and in this case, it will also be returned to
      your banana.

Escape will eject you instantly to the main menu, without even
passing 'go' and collecting 200 salary. A further Escape will
exit you utterly, into the world of DOS, or worse....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                          4. The Level Editor
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RIBEDIT.EXE is a level editor for Ribenaberry. It was used for
making the twenty current game levels. It is quite crude (ugly!),
but easy to use. The panel on the left shows the current settings,
and at the bottom left of the screen, your co-ordinates, and the
attributes of the berry beneath the mouse are shown. Move the mouse
and click the left mouse button to place a berry, right mouse button
      to erase a berry.

      Keys:
             1. Toggle through the available colours for berries.
             2. PERM - stay there forever. EXP - 'explode' on first hit
INC-EXP - increases colour on each hit, until it explodes.
DEC-EXP - decreases colour on each hit, until it explodes.
             3. HITS - number of hits necessary to explode INC/DEC berry.

             L. Load level - REMEMBER to save the level you are working on,
if you want to keep it, because you'll lose it after you
                load another level.
             S. Save level - writes the current level you are working on to
                the main data file.
             C. Copy buffer - copies the current level into a buffer.
             P. Paste buffer - pastes the copied level onto the current level
             X. Clear buffer - empties the buffer.

      Notes:
             i) Avoid tight fits! The scwish is slightly thinner than a berry
so don't have very small gaps to get through. (Unless you want
                REALLY difficult or impossible levels!)
ii) Remember not to enclose explodeable berries inside boxes of
permanent ones! In the game, if there is a level with no
explodable berries on it, then it jumps back to level 1,
assuming that there are no more levels to go.
iii) Levels 1-20 are inaccessible from the level editor - they
are default ribenaberry ones... I guess you need to know
the password for level 21 to test your levels.....
                OH well... <begrudgingly> ... it's BLOBALOB ... I'm not
telling you any more, so you'll have to complete your own
levels to find them out! There's room for 80 levels - that
includes the 20 default ones, so you can make 60 levels of
                your own.
iv) SEND YOUR LEVELS TO US! If you have made good fun levels,
(and especially ORIGINAL ONES!) send them to us. You can
mail RIBENA.DAT to us, and that will contain them! Maybe
we'll have a level creating competition or something, and
award something silly to the best level designer... maybe!
(How about a free copy of Shooting Ribenaberry? Hmmmmm)
