3. Should have concentrated a bit more on Normalization, transaction,
DB internals rather than PL/SQL. |

5: |
At least three??
Wow...
1. Three assignments could cover more content.

|
What was the single most important thing that you learned from this course?
|
|
1: |
A passion for database |
|
2: |
Ask about the lecuturer who gives the subject. not about the subject itself!! |
|
3: |
Don't study for marks, study to learn. |
|
4: |
Encourage Extra reading |
|
5: |
Good ER-Design techniques and ER-Relational mapping. |
|
6: |
How to write Sql scripts |
|
7: |
I can design a simple database. |

SQL Queries... |
|
14: |
The concept of drawing ER diagram. |
|
15: |
a new lecturer can be better than an old lecturer and makes the course interesting( except the final exam ). |
|
16: |
at least i know how to use queries in sql and PL/SQL ,i never use it before |
|
17: |
basic knowledge about database application development |
|
18: |
database theory |
|
19: |
fundmental information about how to design database system by ER-mapping |
|
20: |
how to intall a database. |
|
21: |
i need to ask uncle google at most time to get answer for DB Nerd Competition. So i now know how to use google well.. |

the marks from the exam is nothing, the most important thing is knowledge. |
|
27: |
the nature of database |
|
28: |
try you best to learn something |
|
11.
|
What could be done to make those topics easier?
|
|
1: |
ER
modelling is a hard part because it's a kind of first step of database
design. More exercises are needed and more examples of successful ER
modelling could be discussed in lecture. |
|
2: |
From lecturer point of vies He done his best,
but I've to do much more practice to make it easier for me. |
|
3: |
I don't know either, however, practices absolutely helpful. |
|
4: |
I\'m
sure these topics were taught very well, it is my fault for missing a
few lectures that I did not understand these topics properly. |
|
5: |
More Practice and Tutorials |
|
6: |
More examples and exercise |
|
7: |
More examples... |
|
8: |
More time could have been spent on that. But considering the fact that we had a lot to cover,it was understandable |
|
9: |
Practice with more and more examples |
|
10: |
Practise |
|
11: |
SQL queries |
|
12: |
divide the contents into smaller parts in both lectures and exams |
|
13: |
exercise solutions explained more clearly, not just displaying results |
|
14: |
for details on the lecture, and more practice. |
|
15: |
maybe add more practise in class |
|
16: |
more content in lecture notes |
|
17: |
more examples and tutorials |
|
18: |
more exercise |
|
19: |
more exercise, and maybe more theory |
|
20: |
more lecturer |
|
21: |
more practices and explanation |
|
22: |
more ralated excercise |
|
23: |
practical work? coz the ones in lectures are like theoritical so cant really imagine how to implement them in real world |
|
24: |
relational
Algebra is easy to be overwriten by sql query. I mean when i took the
sql query that almost replaced what i have taken in the relational
algebra. i think it can be start point to sql query but after we take
the sql query we should not look back to relational algebra. That could
be done by given midterm exam including relational algebra. and then in
the final exam we concentrate about sql query onle. |
|
25: |
spend more time on those problems |
|
26: |
split it and concentrate more |
|
12.
|
Which material related to databases, but not currently in this course, would like to have been included?
|
|
1: |
A bit more time should be distributed for Transaction Processing |
|
2: |
A more \'real-world\' assignment, such as writing a database backend to a simple web application. |
|
3: |
Database internals etc.. from Database Systems Implementation |
|
4: |
How to query the database using java. |
|
5: |
I don' know. I am a non IT-background student. |

6: |
I have no idea, sorry. |

Which of the current topics would you like to see scaled back or excluded?
|
|
1: |
Access control, because its very specific on Oracle. |
|
2: |
ER model could be scaled back. |

From what I hear from friends in the industry, this is not practise
very often, and a thorough grounding in ER-Design is more useful (and
this is already covered in 9311) |
|
9: |
dbnerd, i would prefer to be removed to give more chance for all student to attempt the same a mount of testing materials. |

If you have not been attending lectures, what factors influenced your decision not to attend?
|
|
1: |
I
missed one lecture to attend the CSE Revue, and another due to
Engineering Week activities for 1st years. I also missed one out of
sheer laziness (this I regret the most). |

What were the things you liked in lectures?
|
|
1: |
Weiren's passion about teaching and answering questions and intelligence. |
|
2: |
Discussion, exercise, lecture-student interaction |
|
3: |
I can learn something. |
|
4: |
I can see that the lecturer tried to make sure all students understood what he taught. |
|
5: |
Interactive lecture. Lecturer never stops or denies students' question. |
|
6: |
Lecturer knowledge and his topics explanation skills. |
|
7: |
Plenty of examples, I personally learn best from example and this was provided in the course. |
|
8: |
Practicing the examples the way Lecturer Mr. Weiren Yu teaches |
|
9: |
Selected examples. |
|
10: |
The detailed explanation of theory step by step. |
|
11: |
The fact that Amir used the blackboard a lot. Made understanding a lot more easier |

The lecturer :) |

What were the things you disliked in lectures. Write at least three
|
|
1: |
1) No
2) such
3) things |
|
2: |
As
much as I like examples, I prefer shorter, integrated examples that
illustrate some particular concept, some examples went for half the
lecture, and it is easy to lose focus after an hour. |
|
3: |
DB nerd solutions were not discussed.
Extra working was limited to theory exercises or DB nerd competition, nothing that improved our knowledge. |

Any suggestions for improving lectures?
|
|
1: |
Connect to DBMS from the class... give direct example |
|
2: |
I think 1-2 examples are enough in lectures. |
|
3: |
I\'m
not sure if this can be done, but I find it is easier to stay focused
in subjects with two separate lecture times than just one three hour
block. |
|
4: |
MAKE SURE STUDENTS KNOW ABOUT DB NERD FROM THE FIRST WEEK SO THEY DON'T FALL BEHIND. |

Any Comments about theroy exercises OR about running or not running tutorials?
|
|
1: |
All SQL schema should be provided as *.sql script as well, so that we can test our queries. |
|
2: |
I
did the theory exercises at last moment during the exam as we are not
forced to do so. I believe tutorial is better option as it will help
practicing regularly. After all this subject is not about getting
familiar with theories but to actually practice those theories. |
|
3: |
In theory exercises, some technical error should be avoided. |
|
4: |
NC |
|
5: |
No, thanks. |
|
6: |
Some
of the theory exercises I did not attempt were due to my not knowing
how to do them, and the only way to get help being to attend a
consultation. A tutorial is a more structured way of ensuring that
students attempt many exercises. |
|
7: |
at least we can have another way to get help besides lecture |

Optional
labs suit the students with better self-discipline. Compulsory labs are
good for those students (like me) who can sometimes be lazy, and need a
bit of a push. |
|
6: |
Tutor
should be the person who speaks English strictly. Because one of the
purpose of studying in Australia for overseas student is acquiring
English skill in CSE field, then we pay a lot here. A bit disappointed. |

If
you didn't participate in the competition, what was the reason? e.g;
you were too busy in other courses, you think it was more a game than a
learning experience... |
|
1: |
At
the start of the course I participated, but after the first few weeks
when I had assignments due for other courses, they had to take
precedence, after that I didn\'t really get back into it. |
|
2: |
Busy in other subjects |
|
3: |
I didn't participate some questions, because I'm busy doing assignments in other courses and the COMP9311 itself. |
|
4: |
I knew that in the middle of the session I would have to drop out because of the workload from other courses... |
|
5: |
I skipped the first week, then fell behind... |
|
6: |
I thought it is enough for me to learn after the competition. |
|
7: |
I was very busy in other courses this semester, so I just attended some questions at the beginning. |
|
8: |
I were too busy in other courses. |

i know it's good, but i have too many courses to take |
|
14: |
none |
|
15: |
some times i'm very busy |
|
16: |
the
reason was the time. you could not manage to give a time solving the
questions specially with full time load of four subjects like what i
did this semester. |
|
17: |
yes ,i was busy in other courses ,and work aside studying |
|
25.
|
Any other comments about the competition?
|
|
1: |
...it is very good..keep going.... |
|
2: |
A
good idea in principle, I wish I\'d had more time to work on it, since
many students in the course are part-time postgraduates, they may be
unfairly advantaged by the competition, since those with another 18
units of credit some weeks can\'t get around to it. |
|
3: |
Competition
is for winning. As i couldn\'t participate in few rounds due to other
subjects i thought i am out of competition and was not participating. I
personally believe there should be some consolation prize for every DB
Nerd round and than the final competition prize. |
|
4: |
I think its good to have competition style to motivate other people. |
|
5: |
I
think not only the top 10 nerds, all participants attended in the
competition should get some bonus as well, for their work and
participation. |
|
6: |
I
think the total arrangemenet of the points should be improved,so that
it could attract people who were not doing well in the first several
rounds. |
|
7: |
It should be bonus mark for everyone who participated |
|
8: |
NA |
|
9: |
The award of the DB Nerd in the final exam could be extended, otherwise, those who are not in Top 10 may lose their passions. |
|
10: |
good but really over-difficult |
|
11: |
how
about the marks awarded to those that participate instead of just top
10? students would give up halfway knowing they're not gonna make it to
the top 10 |

Any
comments to improve assessment items? e.g; their difficulty level,
their description, feedbacks, solutions or marking policy. |
|
1: |
Instead
of giving 14 SQL queries in assignment 2 please give only 8 next time.
Anyone who does the first 8 can do anything. Try making things a little
less tedious and redundant than they were this time in assignment 2 and

2: |
Make more challenging . |

The
final exam summed everything up in a very intelligent way. It's one of
the best exams i've ever attended! P.S: EXCEPT THE TIME ISSUE.
I was running out of time, so I worried about finishing the whole exam,
rather than double checking what I had written. That affected my mark
and I am a little disappointed about it. |
|
5: |
The level of difficulty could be improved appropriately. |

6: |
To much questions for the final exam and I can't finish all. I just got panic because of those long answer questions |
