Data mining is a new paradigm of intelligent data analysis aiming to derive advantageous knowledge from the data. The rapid development of techniques in recent years has made data mining a key approach toward data intensive decision support. This course aims to provide a thorough introduction to the theoretical foundation and basic techniques of data mining. It will cover a wide range of applications of data mining for business decision making. The course contains 10 lectures including tutorials. This course is based on the courses on data mining and the machine learning I taught at the Imperial College in 1997. A large data mining system developed by the data mining research group at Imperial College will be used in lecturing and by the students.
