Go to www.canon.co.uk Click "download Software" Click "iR Series" Click (for example) "iR5000i" Pick your operating system Pick your language On the interface selection page, choose "PostScript" On the next page, choose the latest version "Printer Install" Download the file Extract it to a folder on your disk Type "\\fs-print.doc.ic.ac.uk\printername" in Start->Run, and click "OK". The add printer wizard will prompt you for the model of the printer - click "Have Disk". Point it to the folder where you extracted the driver. There will be a directory structure created within here, and you'll need to find the relevant folder within it. It should be fairly obvious though. (In my case, I extracted the driver to C:\DL\Canon_Printer_Driver, I'm using Win2K, and the version I downloaded was 1.3.1 english, so the folder I had to point the wizard to was: C:\DL\Canon_Printer_Driver\PS3V131_WHQL\uk_eng\printer\win2k_xp) Then, the wizard will ask you which particular model the printer is. The driver is fairly generic, and has ranges of models it supports. In the case of an iR500i, you'll want to pick "iR5000- iR6000 PS3" The wizard should complete without further questions - you'll now be able to use the printer. Windows XP ========== There is often a lot of trouble getting printing to work with Windows XP. Here are some things you might try: (1) Untick 'Use simple filesharing' in the Windows XP explorer options. Simple filesharing prevents proper authentication (the username you type in when prompted is ignored). You will need to untick this in order to connect to file or print services. *Reboot* after doing that. Windows XP doesn't ask for it, but still. (2) Connect to Samba by opening home directory via \\fs-homes\username entering username as WIN\username, then Windows password. (3) Printing by using \\fs-homes\PRINTER. The rest is straight-forward - just pick the correct PS printer driver from the Canon site and install. Then setup he right configuration (e.g. paper feeder, staple unit etc).
