Project Guidelines
Review the project guidelines page here. You can also view the slides from the introductory talk (1, 2).
Project selection
Search the Project
Proposals Database to identify interesting projects and proceed as
stated in the above guidelines. Note that MAC and MCSS students write a background
paper related to the project before they start their project (as explained in the
corresponding guidelines).

Project review
- By the deadline of 5pm Friday 24th July 2009 you should submit a project
progress report. This should be a short summary (4-6 pages maximum) detailing
the work that you have done so far together with your plans and schedule for timely completion of
the project. The progress report will be reviewed by your supervisor and the project
co-ordinator. Details of how to submit this can be found here.
Project submission
- Please first read the instructions in the guidelines: MAC | MCS/MCSS
- Arrange a demonstration: Around the end of August you will learn from your supervisor
the second marker of your project. At the end of the project, you will need to give a demo (and/or
presentation) to the supervisor and second marker (and anyone else who may be interested in the subject
area). Please arrange a time well beforehand, and demo the project preferably before the submission date or,
at the latest, within one week after it. The format of the Demo/Presentation is entirely up to you to
decide with your supervisor.
- Early in September: Prepare and bind your project for submission. We do not require hard-back
binding for the projects. All stationary and machine for binding are provided by the department, and helpers
will be on hand to assist with binding. The required binding is now similar to the undergraduate projects:
standard 'pocket' style binder, which has transparent front and back cover attached to the bridge.
You will be emailed closer to the submission date with details of where to get your project bound.
- Please carefully follow the following requirements for Typing and Binding.
- The standard layout of the report front cover are: MAC | MCS/MCSS
- There are two files to submit in CATE: report.ps
or report.pdf, and destination form, form.txt; details see Project Guidelines.
- You also have to submit a clearance form with your hard copy obtained from the Central Library. Please
ask at the library counter. To receive the clearance you will need to have returned all your library books.
- Please also note that: It will get very busy in the binding room at the beginning of September. Do take
into account the time the binding may take, it is unlikely to be a quick service. Do allow enough time.
- Distinguished Projects:
Each year we may recognise and acknowledge the "best individual project". Additionally, we may identify
other projects which are outstanding in terms of technical achievement, presentation etc.
