Title: Simulation and Gaming in Defence
Abstract:

A tour through the use of simulation in defence training and experimentation, and how gaming technology is transforming the training experience. We will talk about the challenges we face in delivering effective training in exotic (and more local) locations around the world and question how we will overcome the problems of the future.

Speaker Details: Julie Larkman and Emily Cullingford

Julie Larkman is a senior software engineer and technical lead for helicopter simulation in QinetiQ's Training business. She joined DERA in 1999, and since 2001 has worked on the design, development and delivery of helicopter and systems simulation used in experimentation and training. She has worked on a range of defence simulation projects, including simulators for military helicopter research, and training simulators for a large mission training facility. She completed a Master of Engineering in Aeronautics and Astronautics with European Studies at the University of Southampton. She is a Chartered Engineer with the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Emily Cullingford is a senior systems engineer in QinetiQ's Training business. Emily joined QinetiQ nine years ago after completing a Master of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University. Specialising in simulation for training, she has worked on a range of programmes for defence customers, including creating detailed virtual environments for commercial military games, designing and building new training systems using commercial technologies, and technically leading QinetiQ's involvement in multi-company research and experimentation programmes. She is currently leading the gamification of security training within QinetiQ.
