Title: Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science: Real Big Data with Real Challenges
Abstract:

The term Big Data is getting to the point of overuse, yet the challenges of collecting, utilizing, querying and visualizing "big data" remain. At Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science, we help our customers make sense of Big Data challenges in a wide variety of industries. This talk will focus on some of the bigger challenges that we face as well as some of the exciting use cases and technology that we are using to help customers help themselves answer Big Data questions. Students interested in understanding real world application of data and analytics, especially in dealing with technically and scientifically challenging data and visualizations will benefit from participating. Technologies will include semantic web technologies, Haddop, D3, and a host of visualization technologies.

Speaker Details: Andreas Matern
 

Andreas Matern is the Vice President, Disruptive Innovation for Thomson Reuters IP & Science. He and his team devote their efforts to the intersection of content and technology - finding new ways to explore how end users can, without assistance from experts, explore information and find the answers to the questions they are most interested in. His team's efforts are hosted on http://www.cortellislabs.com . Currently, he's been interested in the semantic web and the use of graph databases in the life sciences to tackle big data problems, as well as understanding newer approaches to solving life sciences problems, both technically and scientifically. Andreas' background is in computer science and molecular genetics, but he has spent the entirety of his professional career involved in bioinformatics, where he has worked for over a decade. He has worked at LION Bioscience, Teranode and InforSense before coming to work at Thomson Reuters. He proudly lives in Boston, MA, with his wife and two children.
