Title: | mHealth in Clinical Studies |
---|---|
Abstract: | Clinical Trials are conducted to prove that drugs are safe and efficacious by collecting data from trial subjects. Traditionally we have focused on data collected at discrete encounters - the subject attends a clinic and is assessed based on their state at the time. Some observations may be subject to bias such as white coat syndrome. If we collect data on a continuous basis, then effect of biases can be reduced and potentially hidden characteristics may be exposed. Mobile health (mHealth) devices present a new and interesting data collection modality and with the increasing ubiquity of devices (such as smart phones, smart watches and activity trackers) present interesting opportunities in the conduct of clinical studies. This talk will start with a gentle introduction to clinical studies, covering why and how we collect data. We will then cover how we have used mHealth devices in Clinical Trials and where we see this going. |
