Title: Gamesys: Having fun, making fun!
Abstract:

The world of online cash gaming is one of the most challenging and fast paced sectors of the digital industries. It is a world of excitement, risk and big reward for the players and the developers alike. In this talk we will look at some of the interesting challenges and innovative (and occasionally weird) solutions that we are faced with every day in the online Gambling industry. This talk will help inform the audience of the everyday working practices of a developer in one of the world's most successful online gambling companies as well as get them thinking about fun real challenges that they would face. Topics we will cover will be;

  • Intro to Gamesys: Big Numbers! Big prizes!
  • What do big stakes mobile games and barcodes have in common?
  • Why do we care how fast you are moving when you play a slot?
  • Smoke and mirrors and surprising issues.
  • The connection between legacy code and luck.
  • Samsung’s annoying names for devices and broken animations.
  • Superslick or: How the company learned to stop worrying and love the coders.

  • Speaker Details: Jonny Andrews & Melanie Munden

    Jonny Andrews: Senior front end team lead at Gamesys with 15 years industry experience. Starting as a self taught games developer working in an attic in a startup casino games company. After that company was bought by PlayTech, he spent a few years working on large scale interactive installations and as an interface consultant for weird clients before returning to his first love, the online gaming industry. Melanie Munden: Development Manager at Gamesys, leading teams who create our awesome games! With 15 years experience, she has spent the majority of her career as a Java web developer. Getting a fantastic opportunity in 2011 to work for Electronic Arts Playfish, she moved into the gaming industry to work on The Sims Social. After the sad demise of Playfish, she moved to Gamesys where she had great fun creating Bingo games, before recently becoming the Development Manager for the Games Studios, working on Slots, Casino and Bingo games.
