Q&A on Windows 2000

A number of basic questions are covered in the Introduction to Windows.

Why doesn't the mousewheel work?
I would like to use single click for opening items.
Internet Explorer hangs and crashes the desktop.
I'd like to remove the Outlook icon from my desktop.
Exceed says that it's config data file is corrupted.
How can I stop Mozilla storing mail headers in my profile?
I can't change settings in the taskbar?

Why doesn't the mousewheel work?

PS/2 wheelmice seem not to be detected correctly - USB ones work OK. You'll need to tell the machine to look for the wheel. This option is in:

Start -> Settings -> Control-Panel -> Mouse -> Hardware -> Properties -> Advanced Settings
Set the "Wheel Detection" to "Look for wheel". Some mice have been known to still not work properly after this is done - try "Assume wheel is present" in this case.

I would like to use single click for opening items.

Single-click (also known as "view my desktop as a webpage") is part of the "Active Desktop" (TM) which is switched off as it causes huge problems with profiles, and slows the machine down significantly.

Internet Explorer hangs and crashes the desktop. Top of page

You can separate IE (and the folder windows) into a separate process from the desktop. In a shell window go to:

Tools -> Folder options...
On the "View" tab, select "Launch folder windows in a separate process".

This should mean that if any folder windows or IE windows hang the desktop is not affected.

I'd like to remove the Outlook icon from my desktop.

This is part of the Office package. In order to move (or remove) it, the package would need to be rebuilt. Removing it by hand would cause the Office package to repair - the package installer would notice it has gone missing, and replace it.

Exceed says that it's config data file is corrupted.

I have seen this before, and it's been caused by a part of the registry becoming unmounted. You can see if this is the case by running "regedit", and looking at the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE" key. If it is not mounted correctly, there will be an error when you try to look at it - "Cannot open SOFTWARE: Error while opening key". If this is the case, a reboot should re-mount the registry and all will be well.

How can I stop Mozilla storing mail headers in my profile?

Our default configuration for Mozilla stores all the profile data on drive H:.

If you were to move your existing mozilla configuration out of the way, and drop the Application Data\Mozilla\registry.dat from the 'default user' profile in in place of your own (as the only file in the directory), you should find that the profile is created in H:\.windows\mozilla.

I can't change settings in the taskbar?

Do you mean the taskbar, or the "quick launch tray"?

From what you said, it sounds like you're asking for the quick launch tray, which is a feature provided by "Active Desktop" - the Internet Explorer version of the windows shell. We had to disable Active Desktop in order to get roaming profiles working, so the features and bugs that active desktop provides will not be available.

You should be able to create additional shortcuts in the start menu, and on the desktop.
