The Role of the Mentor
The Mentor is usually an experienced lecturer who has worked within the department for some time and has a reasonable knowledge of how research and teaching within the College are carried out. He or she will provide support to the new lecturer during the probationary period.
It is anticipated that the mentor will:
i) help the new lecturer settle in;
ii) assist the new lecturer by listening to his/her problems and taking time to discuss them;
iii) share best practice and act as a role model.
iv) intervene on the new lecturer/teacher's behalf when necessary;
v) provide guidance on College issues;
vi) provide feedback on performance and
vii) help to clarify the objectives/targets.
The new lecturer should establish regular meetings with the Mentor to discuss or seek advice on the issues mentioned above. The Mentor is required to comment on the new lecturers progress.
