Research Duties of Probationary Lecturers
Most lecturers in the Department (apart from their teaching and administrative duties) also pursue independent research. You might wish to work in a research team which will often focus on particular major problems, or you may wish to work individually on problems that are of special interest to yourself. Details of your colleagues research interests can be fond on this link: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/computing/research. If you have particular strengths you may be asked to supervise (PhD) students or postdoctoral research assistants.
Occasionally you might be expected to give presentations about your research at seminars and conferences, and write about it in university Technical Reports and in academic and professional journals. Excellence of knowledge, enthusiasm and good communication and presentation skills are very much to the fore in this area of your work.
Another aspect of your job may be to seek funding for your research projects. Therefore you may have to compile and justify the award of a grant within the College or from the Research Councils or even from industrial sponsors. This can take quite a bit of your time - but can be very satisfying when a large cheque comes!
