When I was writing my thesis, I just couldn’t find a clean and up-to-date template. Anything I found online that looked remotely official was old, out-of-date and just a mess to work with. So I decided to build on my previous final year project template and prepare it for a thesis length work.

Looking for a guide, step-by-step insights on how to write a thesis, look here, a recipe for writing a PhD thesis

Most universities have guidelines for writing a thesis rather than restrictive LaTex templates. If you follow the guidelines, then you can use any template rather than what they give you.

How do you know if Imperial College accepts this template? I have a PhD.

The advantages of this template compared to the old ones are:

  • Up-to-date modern packages: For example it encourages you to use the newer biblatex.
  • Little boiler plate: Most templates come with custom macros, things I cannot decipher and not sure what and where to change. It assumes you just type text and never worry about styling or LaTex. Besides the title page, this template does nothing.
  • Organise into chapter includes: Demonstrates how to use \include and group your material into chapters. But only uses in-built LaTex and no custom macros or commands.
  • Preamble sections: Easy to update preamble sections such as Declaration of Original which Imperial College guidelines requires as well as Copyright notice, Dedication etc.

I recommend reading the short main.tex file to get a feel for what is going on. Good luck writing!

Why not combine this template with VS Code Docker Latex Template, the recommended way of living with LaTex.
